Federal Financial Incentives for Training | |||||||||||||||
| Under the Australian Apprenticeships program, the Federal Government is offering financial incentives in a wide variety of qualifications at Certificate III and Certificate IV levels. For the purposes of receiving federal financial incentives, the term “trainee” has been given a fresh meaning that embraces the commitment of government and industry to upskilling Australians. Traineeships are available to new and existing employees and generally cover industries that do not require a trade certificate such as business. The range of financial incentives include (at minimum) a standard commencement of $1500 and upon completion, the employer receives an additional $2500, for a total of $4000 per eligible employee. | ||||||||||||||||

| George Maamary's Story | ||||||||||||||||
| In 2006, a legislation change meant anyone wanting to work as a Collector, Investigator, Process Server or Repossession Agent in New South Wales requires a Certificate III in Financial Services (Mercantile Agents). Train to Succeed is helping private investigation and commercial agency companies like GM Investigations (http://www.gmi.com.au/ ) meet these new requirements. George Maamary from GM Investigations spoke to Train to Succeed about these changes and asked for a solution. The solution is cost effective and practical. Train to Succeed’s solution was to arrange to have an Apprenticeships Centre talk to George and his staff about the Federal Government’s Traineeship Scheme. Some of George’s employees were eligible to become trainees, which means that the Government will pay for their Certificate III. Once staff signed on as 'trainees', their resumes and examples of their professional work will be used by Train to Succeed to ascertain any knowledge shortfalls. A training plan will be developed for each employee to identify which units they will complete in Train to Succeed's virtual classroom! The outcomes are that GM Investigations meets the new legislative requirements with no out-of-pocket expenses whilst their employees have an opportunity to update their skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification. |

| Dean Cohen's Story | ||||||||||||||||
| A Port Macquarie IMA member has successfully obtained a Certificate III in Financial Services (Mercantile Agent) with minimal impact on his business. Dean Cohen from Persuasion Pty Ltd in Port Macquarie was concerned about how he and his staff were going to find the money and, more importantly, the time to obtain the mandatory qualifications to stay licensed. He kept hearing about a company called Train to Succeed that were helping IMA members meet the legislative requirements by using an individual’s skills and knowledge to gain recognition for prior learning and experience. He talked to the CAPI Unit about Train to Succeed and they told him that Train to Succeed is a Registered Training Organisation and can issue the necessary qualification. Dean is the first to admit that he was sceptical but not anymore. He has obtained a Certificate III in Financial Services (Mercantile Agent). Randall is currently assisting Dean’s staff with obtaining their qualifications too. With over 16 years experience in the industry, he can’t believe how stress-free the process was and provides the following advice to other IMA members: • If you’ve been in the industry for a while, it is worth considering recognition of prior learning. • If you’ve done the right thing over the years, it is really easy to provide evidence of your skills and knowledge, for example, your trust fund paperwork or testimonials from happy clients. • Ring Train to Succeed and have a chat. It will change your life! Don’t forget to ask Train to Succeed about government funding. |

| The Education Pathways for Community Services Careers Interim Report January 2007 (http://www.qld.gov.au/ngo/news/2007/documents/ngo-ed-pathways-2007-01.pdf) is part of a research project about recruitment and retention within the NFP sector. The following statements are part of the interim report: • There is a perception that key stakeholders (including government) and the wider community do not recognise the professional capability and/or qualifications of employees within the community services sector. • One of the causes of staff turnover is the perception of an apparent disconnect between the training provided for those entering the sector and the skills required to carry out the work. • Perception that, while training is encouraged, it is difficult for employees to take the time out to attend training as there are few resources available to back-fill the position or to assist in paying for the training, particularly in the small to medium organisations. • Belief that training provided by tertiary and/or vocational providers does not meet the skills required in the various role categories. • One of the barriers for the NFP sector is the perception held by most people who are external to the sector that community service sector employees do not have professional qualifications. |

| Brian Vernon's Story | ||||||||||||||||
| Just like his organisation, Australian Red Cross, Brian Vernon, the First Aid Health and Safety Manager for Canberra is here to help. Brian’s position is responsible for developing the Red Cross’s training sector within the ACT and its surrounds. Brian is so successful at promoting his training courses; he has also stepped into the trainer role again to meet client demand. Brian’s passion to spread the word about the Australian Red Cross, and in particular their Mental Health First Aid training course, led him to contact Train to Succeed and discuss his need to have specific formal qualifications. Brian felt these qualifications would help demonstrate his professionalism and credibility within his organisation as well as with clients. Brian’s only concern was that he didn’t have time to undertake formal study or attend classes. Fortunately, a life time of experience, skills and knowledge allowed Train to Succeed to undertake a “recognition of prior learning” process for Brian. In November 2006, Train to Succeed helped Brian gain recognition in the form of a Diploma of Business (Frontline Management) as well as a Diploma of Paramedical Sciences. He has also successfully gained a Diploma of Business Management. In 2007, Brian has successfully obtained a Diploma of Government (Occupational Health & Safety) to expand his professional expertise within his organisation. |

| Kerrie Barnes' Story | ||||||||||||||||
| As the Administrator at the Surf Life Saving Queensland Point Danger Branch and a volunteer club member, Kerrie Barnes doesn’t have a lot of spare time to look after herself. She is kept busy undertaking a variety of tasks every day for the 11 clubs that she oversees and provides administrative support for. Kerrie’s day could involve answering phones calls from members, replying to emails, organising training assessments, planning meetings and carnivals (and actually attending these events) as well as undertaking representational duties on various committees and branch meetings. She attended a meeting earlier in 2007 and heard about Train to Succeed and how they offered a skills recognition service. Kerrie had previously undertaken study but had found it difficult to complete with her hectic schedule. But, she still wanted a formal qualification to reflect her skills. She rang Tricia at Train to Succeed who explained how the process worked, SLSQ Point Danger Branch paid for the qualification, whilst all Kerrie had to do was provide examples of her skills. With her extensive work history and knowledge base, Kerrie obtained a Diploma of Business (Frontline Management). Kerrie sees the service Train to Succeed provides as being a good fit for SLSQ and other not for profit organisations. She says many people within these organisations are too busy “doing what they do” and wearing multiple hats and don’t look after their own needs. This was a win-win for everyone! |

| The Australian Government predicts that in the next five years more than half of the new jobs created are expected to be in four broad occupational groups: • Accounting, Finance and Management • Sales Assistants and Storepersons; • Health, Fitness, Hair and Beauty; and • Clerks, Receptionists and Secretaries. (Source: Australian Jobs 2007) It is important to note that Train to Succeed offers certificates and diplomas that meet the needs of a number of these occupational groups. The Australian Jobs 2007 states that “it is evident, however, that the largest number of occupations which have good job prospects require skills you can only get through post school education and training”. |

| After 23 years with the Queensland Police Service, Justin Page knew it was time for a change. He started ringing Registered Training Organisations and TAFEs to talk about what his skills would be worth in the form of qualifications. When he mentioned recognised prior learning, Justin found the organisations’ processes difficult to deal with and presenting a mountain of work. Then, Justin found Train to Succeed. Train to Succeed looked at his skills and knew immediately that Justin would easily meet the criteria for a number of qualifications: • Diploma of Security & Risk Management, • Diploma of Government (Investigation) and • Certificate IV in Training & Assessment. With Justin’s approval, he received those qualifications within 28 days of submitting the application. Now, on his very first job application, Justin has landed himself a new job as an Investigator with a Federal government body. Justin believes that his qualifications helped him stand out from the other applicants. |
